AbstractThis paper discusses the main factors that have contributed to developments in environmental education in New Zealand in the latter part of the 20th Century. These include the changes brought about as a result of the passing of the Resource Management Act in 1991 and a series of consequent documents that stress the need for more effective environmental education, and the leadership role taken by providers of non-formal education, for example local government.
