In the field of tertiary education, many of today's problems are paradoxically the result of yesterday's solutions. Once successful institutions can lose their position as front-runners, and may even collapse, if they don't adapt to new contexts. The experiences of two institutions - the Open Learning Agency of British Columbia and the University of Phoenix - are considered in the light of such considerations. They provide contrasting examples of adaptation to the complex and dynamic environment of the present century.
