Abstract
Supporting the learning needs of a diverse student population in a timely and appropriate manner presents many challenges, particularly in a distance learning environment where students are separated from teaching and support staff and other learners. In such an environment students can experience isolation, little sense of connection and belonging, and often struggle to maintain engagement in and motivation for learning. Technology offers us opportunities to bridge this distance. This presentation describes two recent developments in learning support at the Open Polytechnic. One is 'low tech' and the other a 'high tech' approach to enhancing the engagement, retention and success of first year students with diverse learning needs.
